With Chickens Its an Omelete
“Hello?” she hears.
“Are you there?” she hears again.
This time she rolls out of bed, feeling around for the phone as if she were blind. She knocks over the clock and the lamp before she finally finds.
“Hello?” she answers.
“Oh…hello. Did I wake you?” he asks.
“What do you think Marty?” she says as she yawns.
She looks at the clock and realizes that it is only midnight. She then begins trying to remember what time she’d fallen asleep. As she is calculating she realizes that Marty is talking.
“…yeah its not that I don’t want to. I mean I just can’t ya know. I mean I just don’t think I can do it. It’s not you, it’s me…” he explains.
She hears a loud noise in the background. She ignores it as she tries to keep her composure just long enough to understand him.
“Marty? What are you doing Marty?”. She asks desperately.
“Well Emma, I guess I’m… um breaking up with you.” Marty said quietly.
The loud noise came again and drowned out his words.
“What Marty? What did you say? Where are you? What is that terrible noise?” Emma whines.
“Its uhh…it’s the train.” He replies reluctantly.
“A train? Why are you near a train?”
“Because…because I’m leaving Em. I’m living here.”
“Oh Marty. Are you going to visit Bo again? You don’t have to break up with me everytime you go visit Bo. I get it. Boys will be boys. Its okay. I will see you when you come back okay. And then we can talk to our parents like we planned okay?” she offered.
“Em…”
“Yeah?” she yawned.
“I’m not coming back… Ever.”
He said as she could hear the train arriving.
“I’m sorry for waking you. And for all the other stuff too. But hey don’t look for me okay, I’d hate to think of you spending your time looking for me. And don’t worry about me. I’mll be okay. No situation I can’t handle…”
She begins to cry, “Marty, wait don’t do this. Not now. I can fix it., Just give me a chance. We can do this Mar..”
“No Emma!” he interrupts. “You can do this maybe but I’m gone. And I’m not coming back. I’m sorry again. I mean it when I say it’s me not you. I just can’t. So stop crying, stop calling, just stop.” He continues.
There is a long silence. And then all she can hear is “All aboard who are coming aboard. All aboard the train to…” “I have to go Em. I wish you the best. And uh I know I shouldn’t say this but I love you.”
As she parts her lips only breath escapes.
“Well alright. Goodbye” Marty says disappointed.
The phone clicks and all is silent. All is still in the room for a while.
Emma finally takes a look down at her stomach, rubbing her right hand around her inflated abdominal. She rubs it a little harder “There’s no situation I can’t handle…”.
She writes a note on a sticky note.
It reads “Emma you have 2 weeks and 3 days to make a decision.”
She sticks the note on her cork board next to the pictures of her and Marty and the pamphlets about pregnancy that she received from her doctor.
2 weeks and 3 days.

It was the ultimatum Marty gave to Emma-2 weeks and 3 days from "that day" Emma could have an abortion. She did not meet the deadline, and he left as a consequence.
