Jim's Response to Peter's "The Dance."

“The Dance,” is a light hearted account of two guys at their high school dance. Chase, who is more confident, and a much better dancer meets his girl friend Jackie, while the narrator who is not named, hopes to meet someone there.

They share a joint before going in, and (of course) the punch is spiked, all adding to the carefree atmosphere.

The narrator seems to be unsure of his dancing skills. Nevertheless, when he sees a group of “five or six of the schools hottest girls,” he prepares to jump in and mingle. Just then, he unexpectedly meets Mary Quinton, whom he obviously knows, and they share a dance.

Peter keeps the tone light and carefree through his story, the way you would expect, (hope), high school students to be. It does remind me a little of the movie “Footloose” but without the hostility and friction. I love the little innuendos that Peter sometimes uses in his stories;

“It’s spiked.”

“I know.” She smiled, and in that moment I’m sure all the devils in hell began a doo-wop number in her honor. “Who do you think spiked it?”

He sometimes uses contradicting terms to strike just the right mood;

“Chase pulled the truck up to a stop light and glared at me in the friendliest way possible.”

And

“I might have described it (her voice), as a choir of angels conducted by Satan himself.”

Profanity helps to spice up some characters. Sort of like Hot Sauce. But just like Hot Sauce, it’s easy to use too much.

Overall, I liked it.
