Mark's story, "Sunday", in gist, is about a man, a theoretical physicst, who walks into his apartment and finds his fiance, Amanda, dead on the floor after an act of suicide. Towards the end of the story we learn that he is using a time machine to turn back time in order to go back far enough in time to stop his fance from committing suicide, but no matter how many times and ways he sets the time machine back, he always returns to the same time each time.
I liked the idea for this story. This is a story that needed to be read a couple of times. The first time I read it, I was confused. I thought that he had gotten drunk and was late coming home, and found his fiance dead in their apartment. At first, I thought the part where he went back to his car and opened the metallic box and pulled the "trigger," he was trying to kill himself, but when I read the story again, I picked up on more than I had the first time. I read the paragraph about the time machine more thoroughly. "I open the contents of my bag and remove the small metallic box that has become the crowning achievement of my life's work" made a connection with his mentioning of "researching experimental physics." Then I started picking up on the context, like "Having been here before, I know exactly what awaits me on the other side of the oak..." and "...paninc hitting my voice surprising even myself." My favorite inference was "Reaching up, I go to wipe the tears from my eyes, but a second to late, I realize there aren't any." I love that the story stars and ends the same way. A lot of people try to use this structure, but it doesn't always work the way they want it to. The way this story was written allows that structure to work very well. The only thing I didn't like about the story was that you had to read into it too much because some of it could be taken other ways. For example, "...I stare at the grain in the white oak as I've done at least a thousand times before" is meant to mean he has been at that same spot a thousand times before because of the time machine, but it could be taken because it is his apartment, he has been in the same spot a thousand times before.
